The excursion between the cols of Sassolungo provides an extraordinary ski mountaineering and steep skiing experience. It develops in a loop within one of the most spectacular Dolomite environment. A technical and complete itinerary through steep couloirs that bring to Forcella del Dente and to Forcella Demetz (Forcella del Sassolungo).
The ski touring in Sassolungo starts from Rifugio Passo Sella, at an elevation of 2180 meters, and it leads to the bottom of the couloir that rises between the south walls of Mount Punta Grohmann and Mount Dente. The climb gets steeper and steeper and we reach the col, at 2780 meters (very likely crampons are needed).
The thrilling ski descent develops through a beautiful steep couloir squeezed between Mount Torre Innerkofler and Mount Dente of the Sassolungo popping out into the wide slopes of Conca del Sassopiatto and to Rifugio Vicenza, at an elevation of 2253 meters.
With our seal skins back on, we climb up the steeper and steeper couloir that leads to Forcella del Sassolungo and to Rifugio Demetz (2680 meters). The nice descent through the wide crag will get us back to the starting point of this exciting excursion.
The ski mountaineering tour to Sassolungo features a 1200 meters elevation gain and loss. It requires good training and mastering of technical skills of ski mountaineering and is rated as OSA (Excellent Mountain Skier). Maximum incline is 45 degrees.
